The Harry Potter book series

Posted on

If you haven't heard about Harry Potter, where have you been hiding?  Harry Potter is a character created by the brilliant writer J.K.Rowling, and first came known to us in 1997. 7 books later and with nearly 500 million copies sold, there must be something pretty special about them.  Each book became a major film production which all broke box office records and the books were translated into 67 different languages. The seven books are titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.

So for those who have been in a coma for the past 14 years or have lived under a stone,  the series is about a young wizard named Harry Potter.  Sadly the story begins in his home where he is an orphan and lives with his Aunt and Uncle in a cupboard under their stairs.

He is treated pretty badly and life isnt great for the young harry.  His life takes serious change when he finds out his is a wizard and attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to learn how to use magic.

With two great friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, Harry encounters lots of adventure with some fabulous mythical creatures like dragons, trolls, werewolves, and to name just a few. It isn't long before Harry learns that is he quite a famous wizard and the is the key to defeating the most powerful dark wizard Lord Voldemort.  He learns that Lord Voldemort was responsible for the death of his parents because they didn't wasn't to use their magic for evil. At the time he tried to kill Harry but he failed leaving him with a lightening scar on his forehead.

The first movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone or Sorcerer's Stone, viewers get completely drawn into the world of wizardry.  The Hogwarts school itself is an amazing spectacle.  The rooms tend to move around as do the stairs including the grand staircase. The pictures on the wall are like little movies as they move and talk to you. To get to the Hogwarts school you need to take the Hogwarts express which is boarded from Platform 9¾ at King's Cross station in London.

The Harry Potter book series is enjoyed by people of all ages around the world.  There is pretty much every type of merchandise available and even movie location tours.  Also a popular theme park attraction opened up at Universal Orlando in the spring of 2010.

For more information on going on a Harry Potter Walking Tour or the popular Harry Potter Studio Tour, why not check out Brit Movie Tours who are a London based tour company offering many other London film Locations tours.

Top 10 Harry Potter Fansites

Posted on

Throughout JK Rowling's spree of best-selling novels, a wide variety of fansites have sprung up, numbering in the thousands. Most fans, however, are devoted to two or three of the top HP fansites.

1.  MuggleNet - mugglenet.com - "Swish & click!"

Definitely the largest and most popular one, MuggleNet was founded several years ago by Emerson Spartz and consists of news, editorials and encyclopedial information on the books. It also features the Chamber of Secrets Forums, fanfiction and an RPG. Its podcast, MuggleCast, has been listened to regularly by millions of Internet users. Recently, the site has undergone intense commercialization, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars of advertising revenue each year, much of which goes to its founder, who does little to support the site now and has lost his interest in Harry Potter, sadly. The site has received an award from JK Rowling.

2.  The Leaky Cauldron - the-leaky-cauldron.org - "The most trusted name in Potter"

The second largest and second most popular HP fansite, British-based The Leaky Cauldron exhibits a nice, clean design and functions with a team of dedicated volunteers. It has news, an image/video gallery, editorials, encyclopedial information, a podcast (PotterCast), a discussion forum (Leaky Lounge) and an essay project called Scribbulus. The webmaster is Melissa Anelli, who has spoken to JK Rowling on a few occasions. The website has received a fansite award from JK Rowling, who says it is her "favourite fansite".

3.  Veritaserum - veritaserum.com - "Let the truth be told!"

Veritaserum is a lovely website, founded by 18 year-old Matthew Vines, with a deliciously easy, navigable, friendly, interesting interface. It has the usual features: forum, news, info, images, videos, etc.

4.  HPANA - Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator - hpana.com

Although HPANA functions mainly as a super-fast news aggregating service, they have a very large, active forum and have received a fansite award from JK Rowling. It was founded by Jeff Guillame in 2002 and was the first HP fansite Jo ever visited.

5.  Harry Potter's Page - potterspage.com - "Feed your Potter addiction!"

This website  definitely has the best motto (see above), but also, a wide variety of other good attributes.

It has a nice design, regularly updates with news and is one of the older Potter fansites, dating from December 2001.  It also has a podcast.

6.  Snitchseeker - snitchseeker.com

A fairly large fansite, that's very alive despite its dodgy design. It has one of the largest forums out there, and has a reputation for delivering startlingly quick pieces of Harry Potter news before anyone else.

7.  Potterish - potterish.com

The second-largest Brazilian fansite, in Portuguese. It has one of the quaintest and most endearing designs that makes you wish you could speak Portuguese. The site has been praised by JK Rowling, and awarded a fansite award "... in appreciation of your style, your Potter-expertise and your responsible reporting"

8.  The Harry Potter Lexicon - hp-lexicon.org

The HP Lexicon, founded by school librarian Steve Vander Ark, is arguable the biggest HP encyclopaedia on the Net. It details spells, characters, creatures, potions and places all to do with the HP universe. It created the first timeline of all events in the series. JK Rowling, on awarding it her Fansite Award, said "This is such a great site that I have been known to sneak into an internet cafe while out writing and check a fact rather than go into a bookshop and buy a copy of Harry Potter (which is embarrassing). A website for the dangerously obsessive; my natural home." Recently, JK Rowling & Warner Brothers sued the Lexicon and RDR Books, who were collaborating to produce a book version of the site. They won on September 8th, 2008. Nevertheless, although the site's relations with the author they adore have been ruined forever, it remains the most incredible source of collated HP information on absolutely everything within that universe.

9. Harry Potter Fan Zone - harrypotterfanzone.com

This Australian-based fansite was founded by Andy McCray in 2003. The largest fansite in the Southern Hemisphere, JK Rowling has said:  "How could I not love a fansite whose contributors include people named Thaddeus and Aunna? This is a great Australian site with an impressively young staff who have produced some really insightful editorials; I wish I could highlight a couple of them, but that would be waaaay too revealing." The site has received a Fansite Award from her.

10.  Fictionalley - fictionalley.org - "Creativity is magic"

Fictionally is the largest collection of Potter fan fiction on the web. It also has quite a significant amount of fan art. They have four fanfiction "houses" - Ridiculous for humor fics, Astronomy Tower for romance fics, The Dark Arts for dramas, angst, mysteries and everything else, and Schnoogle for novel length fanfics. It was started by a group of fans a few years ago and is not for profit.
